SMSThe Sony FX5 feels like the small Sony cinema camera a lot of people have been waiting for. It takes the compact body style that made the FX3 so popular, then adds the features that make it feel much more production-ready.
The big one for us is 5K open-gate recording. Being able to use the full sensor gives you far more flexibility for reframing, stabilising, and delivering different aspect ratios from the same shoot. For commercial jobs, social deliverables, interviews, and small crew productions, that extra room in post is a huge advantage.
The new codec options are another major step forward. X-OCN gives you a much stronger recording format while keeping the camera small and practical. Add the increased dynamic range, improved screen, better battery system, 32-bit float audio through the top handle, and optional EVF, and it starts to feel like the perfect compact Sony cinema body.
The only real exception is ND. If you need built-in electronic ND, the FX6 is still the way to go. But if you want a small, flexible Sony camera with open gate, strong codec options, excellent image quality and a much more modern cinema workflow, the FX5 is a seriously exciting option.
